Book Review: Haunted by Moti Vidan

Book’s synopsis:

A contemporary existential drama.

When Max, a broody loner haunted by his past, meets Helena, an audacious beautiful woman and single mother of two, in a bar in downtown Tel-Aviv, he has no way of foreseeing the years of trials and tribulations that will follow. From catastrophe to despair, the two fruitlessly try to make a life for themselves, but in vain. Their quest for a better future leads them all the way to Australia, only to find disaster haunting them there as well. When an old relative shares with Max for the first time the tragic history of his family, Max feels that he has found the answer. But he is in for a devastating surprise.

Haunted is a sensitive contemporary novel that intriguingly weaves existential insight with romance and psychological drama, into a convincing tale of our current times.

Looking out his window in the middle of a scorching Tel-Aviv summer, Max is baffled. He needs to find an answer, to understand how, and why? A lost man searching for the wrong answers in all the wrong places, stuck in a helpless attempt to turn his fate around and make a life for himself and his family. Could it be that the battle is already lost?

Don’t miss this contemplative masterpiece that sheds light on the nuanced drama of contemporary living.

My review:

This wasn’t an easy book to read but once you started reading it, you couldn’t stop. It is a story about excess, love and being haunted by the things you do or don’t do in your past.

The writing was fantastic and very descriptive. After reading a paragraph, you could close your eyes and picture yourself actually there.

The characters were very well written and they weren’t written to be likable. Which was a first because usually the author’s in the books I have read (barring any of the self help/non fiction books) there was an attempt to make the characters likable. These characters were selfish people who put themselves and their needs above everyone…..even their kids.

There are a few twists in the book that I didn’t see coming and they surprised me….a lot.

Will I read this book again? Yes

Will I reccomend this book to family and friends? Yes

Age range: Because of the drug use, swearing and sex in the book…..only for late teens on up.
